KATE BELLM

TECHNICOLOR DREAMING

September 14 – October 26, 2012

Moeller Fine Art Berlin is pleased to announce "TECHNICOLOR DREAMING” the inaugural solo exhibition of work by Kate Bellm, opening on September 14, parallel to ABC (Art Berlin Contemporary). The exhibition will feature with “Topheads Paint Bombing,” “Technicolor Dreams,” and “Worldwide Wrongs” three of her most recent photography series, comprising 50 inkjet prints. With her photographs, Bellm plays on fantasies, creating dreamlike scenarios that hint at an endless youth and exuberance. The resulting images are vibrant, colorful, sometimes humorous and always playful.

For “Technicolor Dreams,” also known as “Acid Landscapes,” Kate Bellm devised a special lens using color aluminum foils over Perspex, thus creating colorful images over the backdrop of arid topography evoking the saturated color intensity of old Technicolor photographs. These fauvistic magical images of nature taken in Deia, Tulum, Berlin, on Mustique, and elsewhere, inject a dreamlike optimism into various landscapes thereby making them tales of a carefree and endless journey. On view are fifteen Technicolor photographs, ranging in size between 119 x 84 cm and 59 x 42 cm in editions of 5.

The series “Topheads Paint Bombing” shows members of the Berlin skateboard collective “Topheads” skate through clouds of exploding colored powder. The skaters appear like shadowy apparitions of archaic dancers in ecstatic movements. These images of bursts of bright pink and turquoise capture the skater’s energy, spontaneity and exuberance. Ten photographs of “Topheads Paint Bombing” are on view in two sizes 59 x 42 cm and 42 x 30 cm and in editions of 10.

“Worldwide Wrongs” is a collection of photographs taken by Bellm on her many travels throughout the United States, Vietnam, Mustique, Mexico, as well as locally in Berlin. They document her surroundings: interiors, walls, reflections, and repetitions of objects that Bellm encounters along the way. Thereby the camera acts as an accomplice to the construction of the world Bellm wishes to create for herself. Twenty photographs in “Worldwide Wrongs” measuring 42 x 30 cm, 29,7 x 21 cm and 21 x 14,8 cm, each in an edition of 5, are being shown.

Kate Bellm, 25, grew up in London, where she learned photography in high school, developing her own films in the dark room, via contact sheets and prints. While she began photographing in a documentary style, shooting bikers and tattoo parlors, her work now combines fashion, skateboarding, and her travels for its inspiration. Bellm`s works have been included in several group exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, London, Philadelphia and Zurich, and have been published in Esquire, l’Officiel, Vice, The Herald Tribune, Weltwoche Stil, Interview, Sunday Times Style, Wonderland, Desillusion, I Love You and Lurve Magazine. She lives in Berlin.
