Press Release

Moeller Fine Art is pleased to present a private viewing of recently acquired works by Lyonel Feininger. This selection of rare paintings and watercolors highlights some of the artist’s personal favorites, both from his time as a Master at the Bauhaus in the 1920s and 1930s, and from the period following his return to his native New York in 1937. Feininger marked many of these works with an “X” in the lower left margin, a sign that he regarded the piece as particularly special and intended to keep it for himself, or gift it to a member of his family, rather than sell it. Among these unique works are (Sunset, Yellow Sky and Sea) of 1951, a watercolor reminiscent of the Baltic Sea, which was a gift to his wife Julia on her 61st birthday, and (Sailing Ship on Black Sea), 1934, which was a 31st birthday gift to Feininger’s eldest son, the famous photographer Andreas Feininger.
